The farm has achieved Organic certification status with two national organizations. Approximately 75 acres are presently seeded with organic alfalfa, which is supplied to a local equestrian centre. There is a 14,500 square foot gutter connected, heated and automated Westbrook Greenhouse that was built in 1997. The greenhouse is of poly construction with a custom glass front. This allows for a direct view into the greenhouse and visually links the greenhouse with the tiered production gardens.
The greenhouse has been a centre for heirloom tomato research and production and has also facilitated the growing of many varieties of cut flowers for the commercial market. There is an abundant pure water supply. A dedicated drilled well with 40gpm.output allows for the irrigation of the greenhouse, the tiered production beds and the garden areas surrounding the house This excellent water supply has also been utilized to irrigate salad, spinach and arrugula production beds in those fields adjacent to the greenhouse.
Organic Alfalfa is grown on the lush rolling hills and is harvested for a local equestrian facility.
Recovery of the fields from their previous neglected state involved planting buckwheat and tilling it down as a green manure.
This cycle was then followed by a planting of spelt which was cross-seeded and eventually harvested. The phosphate rich straw from the spelt was tilled back into the soil. The cross seeding of the spelt resulted in the fields being completely weed free.
Mesclun mix salad greens, arrugula and spinach are grown in the irrigated terraced beds and in irrigated field areas.
There is a ready market for all such organic produce in the kitchens of the chefs of high-end restaurants and through the many distributors of organic food.
